SLIDESHOW: See how they put the Hoo back together

Giant restoration project restored Grade I listed mansion to former glory

Luton Hoo will soon open for business as a fabulour five star hotel, and the project had its topping out ceremony this week.

But it has been a massive project to restore the Grade I listed mansion on the outskirts of Luton to its former glory.

Specialist workers have been on site for months preparing the building for its new lease of life.

Fascinating facts about the project:

>> There are 175,000 metres of cabling.

>> More than one million bricks were used.

>> Twenty seven chimney stacks were restored.

>> Fifteen thousand square metres of roads and driveways were resurfaced.

>> It took 50 tonnes of lead to renovate the roof.

>> Because Luton Hoo is home to a protected species of bat, a bespoke bat cave with 50 custom built bat boxes had to be provided - five star, of course.
