Still time to nominate your local community hero
If you haven’t nominated in the Community Awards yet, don’t panic!
The deadline has been extended to September 15 to give people extra time to nominate their local heroes for an award.
Community Awards organiser Mostaque Koyes said: “It’s been a busy summer what with the Jubilee and Olympics, and moving the carnival and mela to July.
“Traditionally we always receive the majority of entries in the last two weeks after August bank holiday.
“But I have the feeling that the Paralympics will make people feel that summer has been extended and it won’t be ‘business as usual’ until afterwards this year.”
People can nominate in 15 categories, plus the Mayor’s Award for Citizenship.
Organisers say they hope many entries will come from local partnerships that have sprung up this year, with people working together in sports, the arts and entertainment on the Love Luton festival.
The extended deadline means there is also now extra time for schools and pupils to nominate their teacher of the year if they didn’t get their entry in last term.
Mayor of Luton Councillor Syd Knight, who will personally judge his own category, said: “What I am looking for are the true unsung heroes out there. People doing small things that have a big impact; ordinary people making an extraordinary difference.”
Everyone who enters, plus the person or group they nominate, is invited to the red-carpet awards evening on November 2 where they will be treated to a four-course dinner with entertainment.
