Little Jamie Luke Adams weighed only 2lb 3oz when he arrived 18 weeks prematurely on Hallowe’en last year. His twin brother Luke was stillborn.

Their mother, Kellie, was warned that Jamie Luke’s chances of survival were extremely limited.

But he’s clung on to life against all the odds - thanks not to the skill and dedication of the NICU team, but also to new medical equipment that helps babies with breathing difficulties.

The machine, called a Vapotherm, is currently on trial at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

Now former dental nurse Kellie, 36, and her husband Lee, 40, of Telscombe Way in Stopsley are organising a charity event to raise £5,000 to buy one for the L&D.

Kellie said: “We’ll never be able to thank the NICU staff enough. They saved our baby – he wouldn’t be here without them.

“We never worry about leaving him at the hospital because we know he couldn’t be in a better place.

“He gets all the care and the cuddles he needs and this is our way of putting something back.”

The Vapotherm keeps little Jamie Luke’s under-developed lungs working and is much more comfortable for the tiny tot than CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). This has to be held in place with tight straps that leave livid red welts on his fragile skin.

The couple also have a 19-month-old son, Liam, who was conceived with the help of IVF. Lee, who works for Highways, has a nine-year-old son Charlie.

Kellie said the fundraiser will feature a brilliant live band and will take place at Stopsley Working Men’s Club at 7.30pm on Friday, March 8.

The pair are appealing for raffle prizes and say local businesses have already been incredibly generous.

“We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the kindness we’ve been shown,” Kellie said.

The former Northfields pupil nearly died during the birth when her placenta ruptured.

But now she’s upbeat about the future and longing for the day when Jamie Luke will finally come home to his loving family.
