Town Hall staff launch Love Luton week
L12-839 Luton festival launch in St Georges Square, Luton. Running race around the square. William Clapp and Tony Ireland. Steve Nolan JR 27 2.7.12
TOWN Hall staff joined youngsters from a Luton primary school in a race against the clock around St George’s Square this afternoon in a bid to promote this weekend’s Love Luton Festival.
Luton Borough Council’s head of procurement & shared services William Clapp and licensing service & parking shop manager Tony Ireland attempted to recreate a scene from the film Chariots of Fire by attempting to get around the square before the Town Hall bell stopped chiming for noon.
Corporate director for environment and regenration Colin Chick was due to take part in the race but had to pull out at the eleventh hour due to an achilles injury.
Following the race, students from Ferrars Junior School, in Lewsey Road, took part in their own run around the square with the winner receiving a free ticket to the festival on either Friday or Saturday night.
The event kicked off a hectic week for Luton Borough Council with the Love Luton Festival featuring boyband The Wanted on Friday night and X-Factor runner up Olly Murs, Luton’s annual Mela on Saturday and international carnival on Sunday and culminating in the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the town on Sunday evening.
