Vehicle service launched to help disabled children

Luton Borough Council’s Shared Care service held a ceremony to launch their new adapted vehicle scheme.

It offers short breaks for disabled children with complex medical needs, mobility needs, autism and challenging behaviour, all of which can make it difficult to take short breaks or access activities.

The team have funding for three adapted vehicles which will allow carers to transport children whose wheelchairs and equipment mean that they cannot access regular transport. It will help the children to enjoy a wider range of trips and activities and live life to the full.

The ribbon cutting at the ceremony was carried out by Justine, aged five, who has has complex medical needs, including needing oxygen to support her breathing and using a wheelchair.

Justine had been receiving support from Shared Care for four years and was chosen to trial one of the new adapted vehicles, which will enable her to spend time with her carer and enjoy new activities, such as visiting Mead Open Farm.

The new service will mean the council are able to offer more short breaks, which are also very important for parents and siblings.

Beata Karwanska, Justine’s mum, said: “I have time to rest and Justine has time to be with her carer and do the things that she loves. That is the most important thing, that Justine is happy.”

Cllr Mahmood Hussain, portfolio holder for children and young people, said: “The Shared Care service provides a lifeline and some well-deserved respite for disabled children and their families. It’s great that the new vehicles will provide more opportunities and activities for young children in Luton.”
