Graduates of Dame Kelly Holmes’ Get on Track programme met the sports star herself at a special celebration event in Luton on Tuesday.
Get on Track is aimed at young people who are not in education, employment or training.
It’s a sports-based personal development programme delivered by world class athletes such as Dame Kelly, which provides young people with the confidence, motivation and focus they need to enhance their employability.
Serena Harrison, 21, who is now training to be a ski instructor, said: “It’s made me realise life is what you make it. I feel really good now and it’s all thanks to the Get Back on Track programme.”
This year, athletes who mentored Luton’s group included England basketball player Andrew Spinks and Paralympian Niki Stanton.
Leona Quinlan, 26, said: “We’ve done lots of sporting activities, made some good friends, got a confidence boost and found the motivation to keep going. I am working now in Debenhams so it does work. This programme helped me regain my confidence.”
