Clegg in town as election fever hots up

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg warned voters that the only way to avoid a repeat of shamed MP Margaret Moran's "betrayal" of Luton South residents is to back Qurban Hussain at the polls next month.

Mr Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam and leader of the Lib Dems since December 2007, was greeted by a scrum of reporters and photographers' flashbulbs as his bright yellow campaign bus, complete with eight foot high pictures of himself and right-hand man Vince Cable, rolled into Luton yesterday.

He met with K2 Manufacturing CEO Omer Kutluoglu and his staff at their Airport Way plant and spoke to press as the battle for the Luton South seat in the Commons drew another top political figure to town.

And he vowed to clean up the scandal and corruption swamping Westminster if local Lib Dem hopeful Mr Hussain is voted in ahead of Tory favourite Nigel Huddleston, Labour's Gavin Shuker, celebrity Esther Rantzen and the other candidates.

He told the Luton News: "The only party who can clean up Westminster politics from top to toe is the Liberal Democrats.

"I think there's now a very strong chance that Qurban Hussain will be the MP for Luton South. He's established an incredibly strong reputation on the doorstep. I've visited Luton many times, Vince Cable visited too. He's the one who told me about this company which I was very keen to visit, and it's been a very dramatic turn around in the fortunes of the Liberal Democrats.

"We've grown from strength to strength to strength. People feel so let down by the outgoing Labour MP, so betrayed, they know they are not going to get any real different politics from David Cameron's Conservatives and they don't trust David Cameron's Conservatives.

Esther Rantzen is a colourful sideshow to this contest." He said that a vote for the Lib Dems should not be seen as a wasted vote.

He added: "The biggest waste would be if we carry on doing the same thing. They've been at it for 65 years, the red and blue teams, making the same mistakes and look where it's got us."
