Dozens of motorists pulled over in crime crackdown

A major police operation saw officers swoop to arrest a suspected fraudster, an illegal immigrant and seize a stolen motorbike in a crackdown on serious and organised crime in Luton yesterday.

Lutontoday joined around 160 personnel from seven forces, and 40 members of staff from various law enforcement agencies to take part in Operation Utah.

Police used Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to create a 'ring of steel' around Luton, South Bedfordshire and the M1, to trap motorists and vehicles flagged up on police crime databases.

Toddington Service Station and the Lidl supermarket car park in Dallow Road turned into a sea of luminous yellow as officers in high-visibility jackets and patrol cars swamped makeshift checkpoints to question drivers pulled in by police.

ANPR cameras were set up at Junction 10 and Junction 13 of the M1 and any motorist flagged up on the police's ANPR database was escorted by special police 'interceptor' cars to the strategic positions.
