VIDEO: New £300,000 water fountain opens in St George's Square

19 jets controlled automatically depending on wind speed and temperature

Luton town centre's newest attraction made a bit of a splash in St George's Square on Monday.

The brand new state-of-the-art 19 jet water fountain was officially opened by the Mayor of Luton, Councillor Mohammed Riaz as Unity Singers performed for the gathered crowd and pupils from St Matthew's Primary School released balloons to mark the occasion.

Each of the water jets are illuminated by LED lighting and the height of the water is automatically controlled to vary depending on wind speed and temperature.

Plans for a water fountain were popular when they first appeared in consultations on the original St George's Square redevelopment, but when the area was transformed there was not enough cash to include the feature.

Last year The East of England Development Agency (EEDA) agreed to provide 250,000, and the Play-builder Fund gave the remaining 50,000 to pay for the 300,000 fountain.

The water feature will be checked regularly to ensure the water is being treated properly to ensure a safe and fun addition to St George's Square.
