VIDEO: Snow driving masterclass

Get top tips from instructor Les

Found yourself skidding, wheelspinning or simply stuck in the past few weeks?

Driving in winter weather is a skill not many of us in South Beds have, given that we're more used to rain than snow.

So Les Stonnell, who runs the LADC School of Motoring, has given us his top tips for driving in freezing conditions.

He said: "Only get in your car if your journey is really necessary. Allow sufficient time for your journey and avoid dusk or night driving.

"A full tank of fuel is essential in these conditions, as your biggest source of heat if you get stranded will be your car engine."

Once you're behind the wheel, Les says, all acceleration, steering and braking should be gentle. Use second or third gear to pull away, and in an automatic use third. If you skid, use your gears to slow you down, rather than your brake.

"Never rev your engine," Les adds. "It only polishes the snow and ice. If you start to skid, steer into it.

"And before setting off, make sure your car is in good working order, and that you have warm clothing and food."
