Warm welcome for Wailer at infants' school

Natty leads music workshops

Children at Whipperley Infants' School were treated to a masterclass in reggae music on Wednesday when they were paid a visit by a former member of Bob Marley's band, The Wailers.

Keyboard player Natty Wailer, who toured and recorded with the legendary Jamaican musician for nine years, visited the school as part of its black history celebrations.

In the morning Natty led a series of singing and drumming workshops and was treated to a rendition of the Bob Marley classic Three Little Birds from the children.

To return the favour he performed another of his former mentor's hits, Could You Be Loved, with the Lea Manor Gospel Choir during an afternoon assembly.

There were then presentations by pupils on black icons, followed by a feast of West Indian food and for parents, teachers and pupils.

Headteacher Linda Griffiths said: "These assemblies are always enjoyable and fun and allow our children to share their learning with the community and help promote greater understanding of each others cultures.

"Getting together and sharing food and music is common to all cultures and brings the community closer together."
