The body of a dog was found partially buried next to a blood-covered piece of wood in a park in Dallow Road.
A member of the public discovered the body of the cross-breed adult bitch in Foxdale Recreation Ground on Friday February 1.
The dog was covered in mud with injuries to her mouth and feet, next to a piece of wood which was covered in blood and hair.
RSPCA inspector Kirsty Withnall, who is investigating said: “ All the signs suggest that somebody has taken this poor dog out in the park, beaten it to death and then left the body half buried.
“It is impossible to imagine what could cause anybody to carry out such a cowardly act but it is vital thate find who ever if responsible so we can ensure no other animals are put in danger. “
The tan-and-white coloured medium sized dog is thought to be a bull breed cross.
She had blunt trauma to her mouth, a bloody paw and marks on her neck.
It is thought she may have been killed with the piece of wood found next to her b ody.
The body was discovered around 5.45pm and was collected by Bedfordshire Police and kept over night before being picked up by the RSPCA, who are now investigating.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 anyone found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal faces up to six months in prison and/or a £20,000 fine.
