Motorists across Luton are being warned of a raft of road closures which begin tonight.
As part of the council’s £30m improvement scheme the M1 J10a spur road and New Airport Way (A1081) will be widened to three lanes in each direction.
Drivers heading for Luton town centre and particularly for flight departures from London Luton Airport are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
The M1 spur road westbound carriageway will be closed between J10 and J10a from 8pm tonight until 6am on Monday 1 December.
During this period no traffic will be able to join the M1 at Junction 10.
One lane of the eastbound carriageway will be open during the day on these dates, allowing traffic to leave the M1 at Junction 10, but will be closed overnight on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November meaning that at these times, the whole of the M1 spur between Junction 10 and 10a will be closed.
This is to allow for surfacing works and gantry erection.
The road will be reopened earlier if the works are completed before the scheduled reopening time.
A further contingency weekend closure is scheduled from 8pm on Friday 5 December until 6am on Monday 8 December – but this is only a contingency plan in case work during the previous weekend is not complete.
It is possible the road may only need to be closed overnight from 8pm-6am.
New Airport Way (A1081) will be closed eastbound (heading towards the airport) overnight from 8pm on Monday 1 December and Tuesday 2 December until 6am on the following mornings.
This is to allow for surfacing works between Kidney Wood roundabout and Capability Green.
Westbound on New Airport Way (heading towards the M1) will be closed overnight from 8pm until 6am on Tuesday 2, Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 December. Friday 5 December is reserved as a contingency date.
This is also to allow for surfacing works between Kidney Wood roundabout and Capability Green.
The combined impact of these eastbound and westbound closures of New Airport Way is that the road will be closed in both directions between Kidney Wood roundabout and Capability Green from 8pm on Tuesday 2 until 6am on Wednesday 3 December and also, if the contingency date is required for works on the eastbound carriageway, from 8pm on Wednesday 3 until 6am on Thursday 4 December.
The week beginning Monday 8 December will be reserved as a contingency week for any outstanding work in New Airport Way (A1081) and any closures required will be overnight from 8pm until 6am.
For all closures, signed diversions will be in operation:
• M1 Spur road closure diversion via Junction 11, the A505 and A5065
• New Airport Way (A1081) diversion via Gipsy Lane, Windmill Road and Chapel Viaduct (A505), Castle Street and London Road (A1081), or vice versa.
Motorists are reminded that narrow lanes, cones and a 30mph speed restriction remains in place throughout the works area at all times.
Cllr Dave Taylor, portfolio holder for environment, said: “This major works scheme being undertaken by the Council is aimed at improving reliable journey times into the south of Luton.
“We are doing everything possible to keep disruption to an absolute minimum, particularly by keeping two lanes open in each direction wherever possible during peak times, and are reaching a particularly busy point in the programme.
“We are continuing to advise everyone travelling through this area to allow extra time for their journeys for the foreseeable period and especially during these necessary weekend and overnight closures.”
