Luton is a “great model” for community cohesion, according to the town’s new mayor.

Cllr Mohammed Farooq succeeded Sheila Roden as ceremonial head of the council at a ‘mayor making’ ceremony held at Town Hall on Wednesday.

Cllr Farooq has lived in Luton for more than 44 years and currently lives with his wife Kousar Parveen and his mother.

The Labour councillor worked for Vauxhall and IBC during his professional career.

He said: “I am truly honoured to be serving the people of Luton as their mayor for the next year.

“Luton is no doubt a great model of how people can live together and share common values.

“And when there are challenges, we will work together and be united as always for the best interest of the town.”

The mayor will support four charities during his year in office, Cancer Research UK, Mary Seacole and Edhi Foundation and The Bismillah Charity, as well as supporting appeals for the Luton Central Mosque and Luton Bangladesh Helping Hands.
