A council election candidate has been suspended by the Conservatives over a social media post which branded travellers ‘pikies’ and ‘troublemakers’.

On Tuesday the Luton News revealed that the message, which was place on the ‘Limbury Mead Residents Page’ Facebook group, told followers to “be aware the pikies have moved the car park at the shops”.

It added: “LOCK YOUR DOORS- GUARD YOUR VEHICLES.”

Limbury Mead candidate David Coulter runs the account, though he said that the post was ”written in haste by a fellow administrator.”

He later apologised and posted a message on the page, stating: “I take full responsibility, and have acted accordingly to ensure this does not repeat itself.”

He added: “This site is supposed to be informative and act as a sounding board, and not act as a forum for insults.”

Luton Conservatives have suspended Mr Coulter pending an investigation into the messages.
