A new Young Road Safety Officer scheme for high schools was launched by pupils at the Al Hikmah secondary school on Wednesday, November 19.

Luton Borough Council planned the project after Mohammed Sowab Ali, one of the trustees at the Bury Park school, requested road safety education for its pupils.

Year 11 pupils will lead discussions about improving children and young people’s awareness of road safety issues, with the rest of the school.

Councillor Dave Taylor and Bedfordshire Police Crime Commissioner, Olly Martins, joined the school for the launch of the project.

Olly Martins said: “It’s fantastic to see so many young people eager to help set an example about road safety to their peers and to their community.

“Nobody wants to see or experience accidents on the roads and the misery they cause so the more awareness that’s created the fewer tragedies there will be. Getting the message across loud and clear by youngsters to youngsters can be a real life-saver.”
