St John Ambulance has announced plans to open a new Badger sett in Luton and is calling for anyone interested in taking part as a volunteer youth leader.

The new Badger sett will open in January 2016 and will be based at The Hat Factory, Bute Street.

To begin with the sett will have capacity for 15 new Badgers, provided that three youth leaders can be recruited.

If more local people volunteer for these adult roles there will be an opportunity to expand the sett in the future.

Badgers are the youngest St John Ambulance volunteers and work towards completing their Super Badger Award, which includes learning 12 subjects, ranging from creative and active, to healthy and caring and first aid.

This lively programme has been developed to enable young people to learn important life skills in a fun and safe environment.

Matt Stevens, St John Ambulance Area Manager with responsibility for the new Luton Badger sett, said: ‘We’ve been thinking about opening a new sett in Luton for a while now and we’re really hoping that local people will step forward to volunteer as youth leaders so that we can get the project moving in January as planned.

“No previous volunteering experience is necessary and you don’t have to have worked as a youth leader before as full training in a variety of relevant skills, including first aid, will be given by existing volunteers.

“Of course, the sett will be nothing without youngsters wishing to join up.

“If local parents are interested in enrolling their children I would love to hear from them.

“Although they are our youngest volunteers, Badgers all round the country regularly show that they have the ability to learn and deliver basic first aid, and joining up at a local sett is a great way for these youngsters to meet new friends and be taught some really useful life skills.”

The Luton Badgers will meet on Tuesdays between 6pm and 7.30pm.

It is at these weekly sessions that training is given in a wide variety of subjects.

They will also be able to start working towards their Super Badger Awards.

> For an informal discussion about enrolling your children as Badgers, or if you are interested in volunteering as a youth leader please contact Matt on 07795 052173 or at matt.stevens@sja.org.uk.

Adult youth leader volunteers will be required to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check before being accepted.
