Student threatens to sue newspaper over driving test article
Queens Park student Ajmal Khan unhappy over article in national newspaper
A student from Queens Park who passed his driving test last week has threatened to sue a national newspaper for an article that said he honed his skills by joyriding.
Although Ajmal Khan, 21, has not denied that claim, he has described The Sun's allegation that he passed his test in a car he was not insured to drive as "fabrication".
Mr Khan, who lives in Honeyhill Road, Queens Park, appeared in the national newspaper on Monday after passing his driving test last Thursday.
The story claimed that, in a call to the paper's newsdesk, Mr Khan said that the skills which enabled him to pass the test first time were down to joyriding since he was a child.
It also stated that he had never had a driving lesson and passed his test in a car that he was not insured to drive.
Mr Khan said: "I will be taking legal action against The Sun.
"They fabricated the part that I had no insurance."
He then ended the conversation, saying: "They have told me not to talk to anyone."
Despite repeated efforts by the Times & Citizen to contact Mr Khan to elaborate on the matter, he was not available for further clafication as we went to press.
But a Sun employee said the paper was confident of seeing off any legal action.
The staff member said: "It would be very nice if he did do that because the interview was taped."
Mr Khan is the son of the owner of town centre taxi firm Anglia Cars and he is the nephew of former Conservative mayoral candidate, Parvez Akhtar.
Both Anglia Cars boss Mr Khan and Mr Akhtar declined to be interviewed for this article.
A Queens Park businessman, who asked not to be named, told this newspaper: "Everyone knows everyone else here and he comes from a very respectable family."
