Taking the time to sit and chat

Do you have a couple of spare hours that could be put to good use befriending an isolated and lonely oldie?

Then Colette McKeaveney of Age Concern Luton would like to hear from you.

She said: “The very best befrienders are ordinary people who have the time to sit and enjoy a chat.

“A bit of life experience is a bonus as older people who are housebound like to connect with someone who has the same interests, or who’s worked at the same place – albeit in different generations.”

She added: “We try to match those with similar or complementary hobbies and pursuits.

“Some volunteers read newspaper or magazine articles to the person they’re befriending. Others play chess, discuss TV programmes or politics. Some listen to music or just talk about life in general.”

Volunteers are CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked and undergo training to ensure their safety and that of the older person.

Colette explained: “Basically it’s a managed friendship, with us in the background to support you.”
