Teaching assistant '˜stoned' at Luton school

The incident took place on the morning of Friday, March 10, at Putteridge High School as the school bell signalled the start of the day.

One member of the public told Luton News that boys had been throwing stones about when the incident occurred.

She added: “They had to call an ambulance for the poor woman, who was only going about doing her job. It was terrible.”

A Beds Police spokesman confirmed the force had been called by the ambulance service attending the scene.

However, after officers consulted with the school it was judged the injury was an accident and they decided not to take matters further.

David Graham, Headteacher at Putteridge High School, said: “A stone was thrown by a student which bounced off a roof and unfortunately hit a teaching assistant.

“We called an ambulance and informed the police straight away, who decided that no action was necessary. We also reported the incident to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

“Putteridge is a very vibrant and friendly school community and we do not tolerate any type of poor behaviour. We are currently dealing with this matter in accordance with our disciplinary procedures.”

An HSE investigation is ongoing at Putteridge High School after a teacher was hospitalised last year.

Earlier this month it was also announced the school has officially become part of the Chiltern Learning Trust.
