Twin treat for Great Barford

31st official meet of residents from Great Barford and Wollstein

England and Germany joined forces last month in a cross-continental meeting to celebrate a long-standing village partnership.

A total of 31 residents of Great Barford travelled to Wollstein – its official twin village – and spent five days in west Germany before returning the following Tuesday.

British members of the partnership travelled by coach, plane and car on a 600-mile journey in what was the 31st official meet of the two parishes. Having watched their visitors arrive, the hosts laid on a Deutsch delight of entertainment, games, food and drink for the duration of their five-day stay.

John Vincent, longstanding chairman of the Great Barford Partnership, said: "I have been involved in the partnership for 31 years now, and several long and close friendships have been formed."

The partnership sees residents of each village take turns every year to cross the water, with Wollstein villagers set to venture to Great Barford in May next year.

The twinning was set up in 1978, with some members having stayed with the same German family for many years.

Committee members advertise the event throughout the year by issuing regular newsletters and holding stalls at local village and school fetes.

Travel for the event is often subsidised by Bedford Borough Council.

The next promotional event will be a family halloween barn dance, held at the Great Barford Village Hall on Saturday October 31, with tickets from 4.

Mr Vincent added: "The meets combine recreation with education, and are well-populated with each passing year."
