A major fire has broken out at Luton’s ASDA superstore in Wigmore, and the public are advised to avoid the area.
A Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said the roof of the store is on fire, with 10 pumps being used and an aerial platform.
All staff are fully accounted for, they have left site and are unable to retrieve their belongings.
The road is closed in both directions up to both roundabouts.
Bedfordshire Police are at the scene diverting the traffic.
The incident is currently on-going.
An eyewitness has captured video footage of the fire and smoke billowing out of the store as cars rush away from the scene.
Another eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: “I was on my way over to ASDA and just as I was about to get out of the car I noticed the alarm sounding and a stream of cars flying out of the car park.
Then the smoke just came across and it caused a bit of panic with the drivers and people who were around, there were a few people fretting and panicking about what might have been happening.
“As the smoke got thicker and blew across the car park it was getting harder to see and I think people just wanted to get out of there as fast as they possibly could.
“I was really worried that people were in real danger inside as it looked pretty fierce but hopefully everyone is ok.
“It’s just not what you expect to see when you pop down to the supermarket and really shakes you up, it’s a reminder just how important our fire service is as well.”
