Author Deanna Maclaren has the happy knack of picking up on current news events as themes for future novels.
She gained inspiration for her last, Azur Allure, after glancing at a Luton News headline while on an easyJet flight to her home in the south of France.
It was a dramatic story about a young mum and her baby rescued from their first floor flat.
Her latest – In Bed With Mr Plantagenet - is about tangled relationships in the newspaper world. And she admits her interest was piqued by what was happening behind the scenes as the News of the World closed two years ago.
“I’ve worked with lots of national journalists and there are always all sorts of clandestine affairs going on,” she said. “It’s a world that’s always intrigued me.”
Deanna confesses to a soft spot for Luton and easyJet. She met founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou on a flight to Nice several years ago.
“He thought I was mad because I was reading the Bible and drinking Bloody Marys,” she said. “He didn’t realise I’m a nervous traveller.”
