Clive Milton rounds-up the weekend's action in the Michael R Peters Bedford & District Sunday League
Several County Cup and League matches were postponed due to appalling ground conditions, and those that were played went ahead in testing conditions not helped by a stiff breeze.
In the Beds FA Lower Junior Cup both New Inn Biggleswade and Sears Morgan beat opposition from the south of the county with six goals, Sears beating Dunstable Athletic away from home 6-3, whilst New Inn won their match at home over Sarries United 6-2.
It took New Inn only five minutes to open their account with a goal from Paul Standen. The Inn then gave away a sloppy goal but Ben Barker put the Inn ahead again. The Sarries went down to ten men but despite that Sarries levelled by half time. In the second half Mark Franklin laid on a cross for Ben Barker to score his second, followed by a Standen thunderbolt to record his brace. Tom Wallace popped up for number five and then Nicky White came up from left back to convert the sixth.
With Sears Morgan beating everyone out of sight, New Inn and Sears, both from the east of the county could well meet again in a cup final at the end of the season. Sears Morgan, then Sir William Peel, won the first encounter in the D & V Millward Cup final last season.
Only two games survived in the Beds FA Sunday Centenary Cup. Bedford Allsters hammered Gardeners Call Luton 8-2 at Mowsbury Park, whilst Bromham journeyed to Houghton Regis to take on Chalton Athletic, hoping to perform better in the cup than they have been in the league.
In difficult conditions it was Bromham who took the initiative but had to wait for their first goal. Eight minutes from the break Sunil Jaymal latched onto a loose ball and drove it into Chalton's net. Chalton had the opportunity to pull that goal back five minutes later but the woeful spot kick did not give keeper James Percival anything to do, except fetch the ball back.
However, on the stroke of half time Chalton levelled, and early in the second half went ahead from a corner. Sean Shankland then got Bromham's equaliser when he was put through to smash the ball into the net. With extra time looming, man of the match Ryan Kelly headed a corner kick just over the bar, but two minutes from time Chalton went down the Bromham end and stole the tie with a header from a corner.
There was only one scheduled match in the league's Brian Craddock Jubilee Cup. Third division side Marston Reds defeated second division outfit Sharks 4-3 to go into round three. It was a tight game in the first half with Sharks taking the lead in the final minute of the first half. It took Marston just 25 seconds of the second half to level the scores when Marcus Cuffy scored after a defence-splitting through ball from Ben Hamilton.
Cuffy then scored two more to reach his hat-trick, but these goals were pegged back by Sharks making the score 3-3. Marcus Cuffy had the last laugh and his fourth goal when he lobbed the Sharks keeper in the final minutes. The Reds have high hopes of reaching the final of the cup again, relishing the thought of taking revenge on Meltis Mexicans who are also going well in this competition.
The Premier Division lost three games to the weather, leaving Lawson Park Rangers to play Supreme at Jubilee Park. Rangers won that one 4-3 to take them comfortably up into mid table. Charlie Betts scored another hat-trick for the Rangers, with Mark Reed notching up the other goal.
It was a similar story in Division One. In the only game played, top side Oakley beat AFC Greyfriars 3-1. Tommy Foyle scored first to put Oakley one up turning a cross in from Ray Patrickson. AFC equalised but ten minutes later Neil Larham restored Oakley's lead. Tommy Foyle then earned his nickname by doing a 'Thierry Henry' but going one better by handling into the net to earn a second yellow card and an early bath. With AFC tiring, Oakley showed their superiority by rattling in number three.
There was more activity in Division Two. Eagle Heating managed to improve on their last meeting with Sharnbrook Casuals who crashed in nine at Lodge Road.
Eagle still lost but only 5-3. It looked ominous at first with Sharnbrook racing into a 3-0 lead, but Simon Cooke, usually a full-back but this time a converted centre forward turned up the heat on the Casuals and scored twice to make the half time score 3-2.
Sharnbrook scored first and second in the second half but that man Simon Cooke got his hat-trick when he was set up by veteran Paul Carey, who later joined the ever increasing Eagle injury list. Sharnbrook wrapped up the scoring with a free-kick. Wootton Wanderers eased up the table by beating Bird in Hand Reserves 2-0, and Cross Keys Wootton also had a welcome 4-1 victory against Ship Inn.
Division Three's lone match saw Salento and Partizan Reserves share eight goals.
There was a full turnout in Division Four. Leader's Harpur Sunday found bottom club North End Astros a difficult team to beat. The Astros were in the lead at half-time but Phil Straccia levelled from a set piece. Simon James coolly made it 2-1 to Harpur but then Astros drove in a penalty to make it two apiece.
Jamie Underwood then missed a penalty for Harpur, but Thomas Donnelly did just that for the league leaders when he made the final score 3-2.
Mowsbury Athletic lost ground to Harpur when they could only draw one apiece with third placed Hobgoblin Old Boys. Mowsbury scored first on 20 minutes when Harry Ellis fired in through a crowded penalty box after a corner. The Goblins got their goal with the last kick of the first half through Stuart Murray. Constant and Co. Reserves kept up their challenge by defeating Flitwick Eagles 1-0.
Embankment found themselves some breathing space near the bottom by beating Bedford Panthers 4-1. Despite injuries blighting Embankment's defenders, Embankment put in a spirited performance and were rewarded with some great goals spread between Josh St Clair Pierre, Dave McCarthy and a couple from Ian Hammett. Similarly, Wells Stars' 4-1 win over Bellini's has moved the Stars away from the bottom where Bellini's and the Astros are in danger of being cut adrift.
There were no clubs from Division Five in league action this week.
