Atieno on target as reserves claim win
Strong Hatters sink Southend
A goal from new Luton striker Taiwo Atieno helped the Hatters get their totesport.com Combination campaign off to the perfect start with a 3-1 win at Southend United on Tuesday.
First team development manager Alan Neilson said: "It is always very pleasing to win your opening fixture and the style in which we did was excellent.
"To bounce back after going a goal down showed tremendous character especially from this group of players.
"We had a number of trialists and young players coming up against a number of seasoned pros in the Southend side which bodes well.
"Adam Watkins had a very good game whilst Tai was a real handful."
Having gone behind midway through the first half, Town battled back and levelled three minutes before the break when trialist Leon Simpson tapped home Atieno's cut-back.
The Hatters continued to play well after the break and took the lead on 55 minutes when Watkins' dangerous free-kick was headed into the net by a Southend man.
Filled with confidence, Atieno added the third in injury time when, after having his initial effort blocked, he found the net.
Hatters: Kidd, Williams (Tavernier), Stimpson, Asafu-Adjaye, O'Donnell (Carney), Watkins, Poku, Grocott (Burns), Walker, Simpson, Atieno. Subs not used: Patrick, Dasilva.
