Barton boss slams money-grabbing players

Fitzgerald admits regret over signings

Disloyal non-league footballers care only for their weekly wage packet and couldn't give a monkey's about their team's plight.

That is the view of Barton Rovers boss Gary Fitzgerald, who this week unleashed a scathing attack on the mentality of a high proportion of players circling in the semi-professional game.

Fitzgerald said he is stunned by the attitude of some of the players who have turned their back on the Sharpenhoe Road outfit and even admitted that he regrets signing certain players in the first place.

He said: "When you look back over the season and you have regrets as a manager, mine are probably singing Josh Sozzo and Dean Buss, because the lack of loyalty in the two players is absolutely frightening.

"They are just like 90 per cent of non-league players, they demand so much, but give very little and I stand by that. The biggest thing I've learnt over the past couple of weeks is to stick by your beliefs and have players there that believe in what you are trying to do, regardless.

"The players that have left, not all of them, but most of them, care more about their brown envelope than the three points on a Saturday, that's the truth. The facts are there and that's the reason why they've left, there's no loyalty.

"If you can get a squad together who are pulling in the same direction, it's better than having two or three players who think they're massive. We've had it all before, big players coming in, yes they raise the profile of the club for a while, but where are they now?

"But then you've got players like young Ryan Robb, who won't take a penny, I've offered him money, he doesn't want it and plays for free. We need five more like him.

"The win over Dunstable on Saturday just proved that you don't need these so-called superstars, we need players that play for each other as a team."
