Devine unfazed by opponent change

Luton boxer Michael Devine

Luton boxer Michael Devine

Luton boxer Michael Devine wasn’t overly fussed after his opponent for Saturday’s Earthquake in Essex bill was changed on Tuesday, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 23-year-old was due to take on Hungarian Andras Varga, but will now step into the ring against Kristian Dochev instead.

The Bulgarian has won five and lost six of his 11 bouts, but is on a run of four wins from five and took undefeated prospect Kieran Farrell the distance recently, only to lose on points.

Speaking about his change of opponent, Devine said: “It makes no difference as I’m focused of fighting my fight. He’s a tough kid and will be lively on his feet with a good defence, so it will take some doing to break him down.

“If I get the knockout it will be making a big statement but I look forward to doing six hard rounds.

“What we’ve been working on in the gym is what I’m going to do in the fight because I’m going to boss the fight, and I’m going to make sure I make a statement.”
