Udofia not taking anything for granted at York Hall

The former Hockwell Ring BC fighter is up against, on paper, a boxer he would be expected to beat in Liam Griffiths.

The 29-year-old has a record of just four wins from 69 paid bouts with 64 defeats too, although he did enjoy a rare points victory back in March, his first win since November 2013.

However, Udofia said: “I’m not taking anything for granted, I’ve prepared fully for the fight and he is a very durable opponent.

“He’s fought a lot of top class opposition, the likes of Johnny Coyle and Johnny Garton.

“I’ve trained hard and I just want to get in there again and do my thing.”

Although not at full fitness for the bout, the former Lea Manor High School pupil wasn’t considering pulling out, after having to miss a bout in May due to an ear problem.

He continued: “I thought I had a sore throat, kept taking Strepsils and it just wouldn’t go away.

“I started getting a temperature so I went to the doctors and they confirmed it was tonsillitis.

“Unfortunately they then gave me seven days worth of antibiotics instead of 10, so it went away and then came back.

“My coach noticed that I was struggling in training, but thankfully I had done all of the hard work.

“A few people said to withdraw, but there is no way I’m pulling out as no boxer ever enters the ring 100 per cent fit, there are always other things that are going on”

“In my amateur days, I’ve gone into fights with a cold, a sore neck, injured hand, sore back, and I can only remember once feeling close to 100 per cent and that was when I fought in Guernsey.

“It’s different as a professional, you have to be more careful and they are very strict about fighter’s health.

“That said there was no way I would pull out with tonsillitis.

“It will be all good come fight night in any case.”

Udofia is now looking forward to being part of the Goodwin Promotions ‘Summer Fight Festival’ bill that is headlined by the Wadi Camacho’s defence of his Southern Area Cruiserweight title against Portsmouth’s Danny Couzens.

He added: “I think it’s going be a great night, I’ve sold quite a few tickets and it’s really humbling knowing so many people are coming out to watch. “The fact that people have taken an interest makes me train harder and having the support makes the tough days easier.”

The 36-year-old from Dunstable has won one and lost 13 of his pro bouts to date and comes up against a 20-year-old opponent who triumphed on his pro debut in March.
