The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first, as opener Ben Howgego continued his good form with 55, putting on 44 with Luke Thomas (11) and 47 with J Ludlow (31).

When he was dismissed, Beds fell from 112-2 to 135-6 as Callum Berrill (18), Michael Pickard (1) and Nick Barden (2) were all dismissed cheaply.

However, captain Andy Reynoldson and Ampthill player Ben Slawinski steadied the ship, putting on 74 runs, until Slawinski was dismissed for 20.

Reynoldson went on to reach his 50 and made 79 from 169 balls with five fours and two sixes as he helped Beds to finish on 260 all out.

In reply, Cambs also started well, with an opening stand of 52 until Slawinski and Thomas struck.

Wickets fell at regular intervals afterwards, as Slawinski finished with 3-76 from 27 overs, while Tom Brett took 2-80 as the hosts finished on 248-8.

Batting for the second time, Beds’ openers were in rich form, putting on 143 until Howgego was caught for 89.

However, Thomas went on to complete his century, although fell immediately afterwards for 101 as Beds declared on 275-5 after Berrill added a quickfire 41 from 40 balls.

Chasing 287 for victory, Cambridgeshire started positive, with openers N Jeyaratnum (43no) and A Butt (61) putting on 109 before Reynoldson had the latter lbw on the stroke of tea.

However, rain then ruined the final session as play was abandoned for the day.

Beds are next in action when they host Hertfordshire CC at Flitwick CC on August 14.
