Wagh and Irshad combine to keep Indians in title contention

A fine bowling performance from Mohammed Irshad plus Sachin Wagh's century saw Luton Town & Indians defeat local rivals Dunstable by 117 runs in their Saracens Herts League Championship clash on Saturday.

Batting first, Ali Hassan got Luton’s innings off to a solid start with 29, before Wagh hit an fine unbeaten 106 as Luton posted a total of 204-7.

Irshad then ripped through Dunstable’s middle order, recording nine maidens in his 17 overs to finish with 6-22, as Luton maintained second spot.

The IIs bounced back from two losses on the bounce to record a 68-run victory against St Albans West Indians and keep second spot in Division Three B.

Badal Naik and Hitesh Chauhan hit 35 and 40 for Luton before Divyesh Patel scored an unbeaten 26 late on, in his side’s 178 from 53 overs.

Patel then took 4-27 as Luton bowled their visitors out for just 110 in 37.4 overs.

Zahid Khan claimed five wickets for the IIIs as they restricted Flamstead to just 84 in Division Five B.

Khan took 5-21 in seven overs, whilst Yousuf Alim picked up 3-18 as Luton skittled Flamstead in just 30 overs.

Indians lost four wickets in reply, but 28 from Rashid Afridi snr and an unbeaten 28 by Munyaradzi Mlambo saw Luton them home at 85-4.

The IVs lost by two wickets to Old Elizabethans in Division Eight A as after putting 201 on the board, saw their opponents make 203-8.

On Sunday, Indians beat Lutonian by 46 runs in their Beds County League Premier Division clash.

Batting first, Town made 178-9 and then dismissed Lutonian for 132.

The IIs came out on the wrong side of a close encounter in Division Two at Preston as they lost by 21 runs.

Rashid Afridi, Ricky Patel and Abdul Yasin took three wickets apiece as they bowled their hosts out for 190.

Despite opener Jeremy Page’s half-century (52), Mohammed Ismael’s 41 and Afridi’s 28, it wasn’t enough to stop Luton being dismissed for 169 with three overs left.

The IIIs beat Kempston by one wicket in Division Three as after their opponents made 229-6, Indians reached their revised target, scoring 218-9.

The IVs earned a 54-run win against Great Brickhill IIs in Division Five.

Devender Singh hit eight fours and two sixes in his 60, after Mohammed Adnan had got Luton off to a good start with 27 and Asif Mehmood scored 39 late on as Luton posted 196-9.

Navdeep Singh (4-30) and Qasim Mehmood (3-40) then combined to dismiss Great Brickhill out for 142 in less than 30 overs.
