Deaf youngsters triumph

National triumph for disabled U16s

Luton Deaf Boys had reason to celebrate after claiming victory in the Deaf Friendly Football Club National Youth Football Tournament.

At the Powerleague Derby Soccerdome, Luton joined 24 other teams for the event that was organised by the National Deaf Children's Society, and which is a flagship of the NDCS Deaf Friendly Football Club project.

Each team took part in a number of five-a-side matches with Luton, pictured above, triumphing in the U16 age group.

Teams from Everton and Derby won in the other categories.

NDCS sports and leisure activities manager Hayley Jarvis said: "In the past there has been a real lack of football opportunities available from grassroots to elite level for deaf children and young people.

"This project is revolutionising the sport at all levels for deaf children and young people, by providing them with opportunities to play in an environment that is safe and fun for them. We were pleased to see deaf youth teams from across England here today, playing football to a high standard and really enjoying themselves."
