Midlands Cup: Dunstablians 20 Old Leamingtons 0

A dominant performance from Dunstablians saw they defeat Old Leamingtons 20-0 in the first round of the Midlands Cup at the weekend.

The home side started brightly, with the visitors struggling to contain their attacking threat.

Glenn Brinkley opened the scoring, after a strong catch-and-drive at line-out, saw the number eight crash over, while Kevin Boland added the extras for 7-0.

The hosts were forced to make changes early on, as Tom Evans replaced the injured Richard Cope.

After a quiet 10 minute spell, Dees increased the intensity and made exciting breaks through the likes of Luke Ashton and Campell Haig.

They were awarded a scrum on the halfway line, they drove forward, before Tom Evans broke away with the ball.

He beat two defenders and offloaded to Toby Mead, who put prolific winger Scott Warren through for the second try.

The conversion was missed, making it 12-0 to Dunstablians.

Dave Marshall’s side looked to get more points on the board before the interval.

However, despite their best efforts, Dees couldn’t find the space in the opposition defence to exploit.

They employed the cultured right-boot of fly-half Zach Bourne, who slotted a drop-goal from distance as they led 15-0 at the break.

Mattie Anderson and Reeve Harnett were brought on at half-time to replace Warren and Brinkley.

The visitors had slightly more of the ball in the second-half, but they were unable to create any real scoring opportunities, due to Dees’ impenetrable defence.

Dees enjoyed long periods with the ball and they looked to put the game even further out of sight.

Their relentless attack resulted in the opposition conceding a scrum on the 5m line.

The Dees pack overpowered the opposition and they drove towards the line, before scrum-half Mead collected the ball and sneaked between the posts for the try to complete the 20-0 victory.

Dunstablians will now be looking to build on this result when they visit Rugby St Andrews on Saturday.
