Ex-defender in FA probe

Former Hatters' Thomas in hot water

Former Luton Town defender Mitchell Thomas could be in hot water with the Football Association over Shaun Wright-Phillips' move to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City in July 2005.

Thomas, pictured during his Kenilworth Road career, was paid part of the 1.2million given to solicitor Timothy Drukker, who signed off the deal.

He was recently part of an investigation by the FA into the deal, which saw a case brought against Drukker by the Law Society.

If Thomas is found to be an unlicensed agent by the FA and was deemed to be involved in negotiating the deal Wright-Phillips and Chelsea could face penalties ranging from warnings to fines and even points deductions.

Drukker was found guilty of "conduct unbecoming a solicitor" during the transfer by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal after Quest, the investigators the Premier League hired to conduct the "bungs inquiry" into transfers, had identified the transfer as suspicious.

The FA can take no action against Thomas or any unlicensed agents because they are operating outside of football's rules.

An FA spokesman said: "We are aware of the outcome of these proceedings and are considering what action, if any, may be appropriate in relation to football rules."

Chelsea and Wright-Phillips both denied that Thomas had been involved in the transfer, with a Chelsea spokesman adding: "We believe we acted appropriately at all times."
