In a game that looked like it would end a with a point apiece, Roache latched on to keeper Jamie Head’s long clearance and outpaced the Saints defence to score the winner.

An evenly-contested game saw the best chance of the first half fall to Dunstable’s Chris Marsh whose close-range effort rattled the top of the bar.

Both teams found it hard to penetrate, but an inspired piece of play saw Matt Nolan slip the ball just behind the home defence to leave Roache with just keeper Michael Power-Simpson to beat, but the keeper made an admirable save.

Meanwhile, at the other end, Head made three good saves to deny Saints sub Daryl Atkins.

The game seemed to be heading for an honourable draw when Roache struck to net his second goal in two games.

It was Dunstable’s second away win in a week following their opening day injury time defeat to Beaconsfield SYCOB.

Director of football John McLoughlin said: “Chalfont play to their strengths, all long ball and we fell into their way of playing, but we changed things midway through the second half and bombarded their box.

“Jamie Head played outstanding and kept us in the match after a great save from a one-on-one and Leon Cashman battled for the cause.

“But we kept breaking them down until Lee Roach got in a great position and finished on 94 minutes.

“I was pleased as we could have settled for a draw, but the players smelt victory and got their rewards.”

Dunstable host Royston Town today (Bank Holiday Monday), kick-off 3pm, on Friday they take on Crawley Green in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup at Sharpenhoe Road, kick-off 7.45pm and on Tuesday week host Kettering Town in the league.
