Bemused Ainge accuses Matlock of ‘conning’ the officials over penalty

Simon Ainge - ltfc v Matlock

Defender Simon Ainge accused Matlock defender Phil Roe of ‘conning’ the referee during Town’s 2-1 FA Trophy win on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

With just over an hour on the clock, Ainge went shoulder to shoulder with his opponent in the penalty area, only to see Roe fling himself to the floor.

Despite being in the perfect position, official Peter Banks awarded the spot kick, in what was one of the softest ones that Hatters will concede all season.

Ainge said: “The penalty was really frustrating because I didn’t even try and win the ball and he’s conned the ref.

“I made an effort that I didn’t dive in because I was in the box.”
