Longden is a shining light
L12-097 LTFC v Hinckley in the FA Trophy at Kenilworth Road, Luton. Luton won 3:0. Mark Wood JR 4 23.1.12 Brett Longden
FULL-BACK Brett Longden can be an inspiration to any youngsters from the Mid Beds area wanting to make it as a professional footballer according to Luton Town’s head of youth Gregg Broughton, writes Mark Wood.
The 17-year-old from Pulloxhill made his debut for the Hatters in their 3-0 FA Trophy second round replay victory over Blue Square Bet North side Hinckley United last month and Broughton was delighted he got his chance.
He said: “It was good for us to see Brett come on because he has done really well this season, especially in the reserve games he has been involved in.
“I saw Brett play as an U10 in a tournament when I was working with Rushden and he didn’t want to leave his club team.
“It’s nowhere near the end of the road for him, but it’s a massive step in the right direction for him.”
Broughton is hoping that more first team chances will follow, and that he can also be a guiding light to potential stars from the Mid Beds area.
Broughton added: “We have a group of boys in our academy from Flitwick, Ampthill and Shefford and it’s great for them to see a local boy come through.
“I think Brett’s performance was enough for the manager to know he can trust him at that level. He is quick, dynamic, good going forward and can defend well one-v-one.”
