Shaw sets sights on lifting FA Trophy

Hatters striker Jon Shaw isn’t taking the FA Trophy lightly this season after Town won through to the second round on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

A 3-1 victory over Dorchester Town ensured that Luton will now travel to Matlock on December 15.

Although Shaw agrees that promotion is the main goal this campaign, he also has his eyes on a Wembley showdown after coming close in recent years.

He said: “I’ve got to the semi-final twice. I got a mauling at the hands of Grays and second time was quite unlucky not to beat Darlington who went on to win it.

“Personally, I’m 29 and I want to win this trophy. It’s not something that I think, oh well, it’s just another game for us.

“If you can get out of this league and win the Trophy as well, then you’ve had a fantastic season.”

Hatters are back in league action this weekend after over two weeks off when they host Alfreton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Town’s home record has been less than desirable so far, with defeats to AFC Telford, Braintree and Dartford, and Shaw is well aware they need to put that right ahead of a busy Christmas period.

He continued: “We’ve got to start taking points against teams like this.

“We’re in grasp of the top spot and if we win our game in hand, we’re three points off. It’s a great position to be in going into this time when there’s a lot of games.

“If we can come out in January and be in touch or with the run of games we’ve got and the confidence in the changing room, be out in front, that’s what we aspire to do.

“We know that we’ve dropped points when we should be winning games, but now it’s time for us to turn it around.

“I think our fitness will start to tell, we’re a hard-working side, an organised team and we’ve shown we’re a good squad. We will start to show that now, as we will be on a good run.”

Shaw returned to the side on Tuesday night, but accepts he will have to fight for his place now.

He added: “The lads have been playing brilliant. Andre is now playing fantastic in a formation that probably suits him better, and Scott played brilliant in that role that I did (against Dorchester).

“So I’m not going to spit my dummy out and say I should be playing, but it gives the gaffer a good dilemma with everyone playing well.”
