The 26-year-old, who dropped down a division from Walsall in the summer, has now bagged three goals in six games after Saturday’s strike at Doncaster Rovers.

Cook, who netted four times for the Sadlers last season, is just one away from equalling his best tally of five in the 2014-15 campaign and on finding his goalscoring touch once more, he said: “I always think at this level I can score goals and the level above too.

“When I got the chances last season, I kind of proved it, but didn’t get as many chances as I would like.

“Coming here was just a massive opportunity for myself to prove that and playing in one of my favourite positions, I’m just over the moon the goals are going in.”

Cook’s strike on Saturday was a lovely early finish across Rovers goalkeeper Ian Lawlor into the bottom corner.

He admitted afterwards that it’s something Town boss Nathan Jones had been hounding him to do more often.

The former Sunderland youngster continued: “He’s in my ear every single day, making sure that I keep shooting, because sometimes I look for that pass when I’m in that position to shoot and that’s just something I tried to change.

“Luckily I’ve got a few goals so far by doing that and I never stop trying to get assists though.

“If someone’s in a better position than me I’ll always to try to pass or slip somebody in.

“At the moment, I seem to be hitting the ball well and everything’s going in.

“He’s (Jones) been getting on to me a lot more, getting in those positions. Luckily Vass (Isaac Vassell) has seen the run and it was a great ball, I just managed to get it and hit it into the side netting.

“The scenes were unbelievable, the fans coming down, think it erupted when it went in, I didn’t know what to do!

“I just started going mental, so I’m pleased to keep scoring.”

Jones himself was thrilled to see a player he has often spoken highly of start to repay his faith in the goals for chart.

He said: “I mentioned to him prior, I said, ‘big players turn up in big games’ and he did.

“If he continues that with his assists, his goals, his quality, I’m delighted for him.

“He’s a wonderful, wonderful footballer, a top level footballer, he really is, when he’s at it. We want him to keep kicking on.”

Cook himself was delight to have his manager so firmly behind him, although admitted he didn’t stop Jones administering a dressing down when he felt appropriate.

He said: “He gives me a good rollicking if I don’t play well. Paul Hart as well.

“They’re both are on my back all the time to score goals, get in the box, take up goalscoring positions and keep getting opportunities to put it away.

“Luckily enough I’ve got a few in the last few games.

“So I want it to keep on continuing and hopefully that leads us to getting top three and getting promoted automatically.”

Meanwhile, Town skipper Scott Cuthbert was delighted to see Cook take his chance, adding: “He’s been excellent.

“His balls into the box as well from set-pieces are causing a lot of teams a lot of problems and I think we’re looking a lot more dangerous from them.

“He took his goal well, it was great strike and he’s got that quality, we see that every day.”

and I’m delighted that he’s showing it now.
