Hatters boss Nathan Jones has confirmed that defender Mark O’Brien will be heading to National League side Southport on loan.

The 23-year-old has been restricted to just nine appearances in total this season, his last coming in the 4-3 home defeat against Carlisle back in November.

“One or two may need to go out before the end of the season really, one way or another, but we’ve got that under control.”

O’Brien hasn’t featured for new boss Nathan Jones since he took over from previous manager John Still, so will now join up with a Sandgrounders team who are currently 15th in the table.

Jones said: “We’re going to let Mark O’Brien go to Southport to get some games.

“He’s been out of the match day squad, he’s trained superbly well, he’s a great lad to have around, but we just need to be fair to him and get him some games.

“Because if he is needed and required, he’s going to have to be up to speed and at the minute he’s not quite up to speed.

“So we’ve allowed him to go to Southport, but he’s the only one at the minute.”

Jones might be tempted to send some other fringe players out during the loan window though as he continued: “If they’re out of the match day squad then they’re going to need games, and we’d be open to that, but we’re not desperate to push anyone out the door or anything.

“We know what we’re doing, we’ve moving along at a decent rate with controlling the squad. We’ve had a few go out, people like Scott Griffiths has gone out, Matt Robinson has gone out and we’ve managed to control that, to control our training group.

“One or two may need to go out before the end of the season really, one way or another, but we’ve got that under control.”

Meanwhile, when asked if he was still looking to bring anyone else into his squad, Jones, who has signed Alan Sheehan and Joe Pigott on temporary deals since taking charge, said: “We do have a big enough squad and we have good numbers to choose from in certain areas.

“If we feel that there is someone available that will improve our 11, not our squad, our 11, then we might consider something.

“But at the minute, they’re giving me everything, there’s no drastic changes needed, it’s just little tweaks along the way.

“If we feel that someone becomes available then we may go for that, but at the minute we don’t feel it is.”
