Shaw couldn’t have continued ‘understudy’ role at Luton

Released striker Jon Shaw admitted he would have had second thoughts about signing a new deal at Kenilworth Road if one had been on the table.

The 30-year-old was let go earlier this month after his two year deal came to an end, in which he scored 10 goals in 51 appearances.

Speaking to the News/Gazette, Shaw said: “I kind of knew it was coming and even if John had have offered me something, regardless of how much I enjoyed my time at the club, it would have been hard to accept.

“I couldn’t really at this stage of my career afford to be an understudy as such, or sit on the bench and watch.

“For Luton it is young, hungry footballers and the lads that have come in have done well, while they are only going to get better.

“I wish them all the best and would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for their support.”

Shaw was restricted to just 13 games this term as his season was hampered by injury early on.

Once fit, he couldn’t win his place back due to the form of Paul Benson and Andre Gray and failed to register a goal.

The former Gateshead striker saw his efforts to go out on loan denied, but despite having to watch from the sidelines, he remained fully behind Hatters’ title charge.
