Still had little option but to sell Gray

Hatters boss John Still admitted he could do little to prevent leading goalscorer Andre Gray from joining Brentford last week, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Championship side snapped up Gray’s services for an undisclosed fee of more than £500,000, with the 23-year-old penning a three year deal.

Still confirmed he hadn’t wanted to sell the striker, who finished last season as the golden boot winner with 30 goals, but had no option when the bid was lodged.

He said: “It was a deal that interested the player, I think that’s really important.

“He was keen to make it happen and in the negotiations, fortunately the two clubs could agree as it’s always important to get the money.

“If Andre Gray didn’t want to go, then we didn’t want him to go

“He felt it was progress for him and you can’t stop that, it’s just a fact of life.”

The Town boss also felt he and his coaching staff had played his part in Gray’s rapid improvement last term too.
