A goal in each half from leading scorer Charlie Clayton and the in-form Mark Smith secured Crawley a well-deserved 2-0 win against Holmer Green on Saturday.

The hosts had started well though as Crawley were indebted to a simply magnificent save from keeper Dean Bull on just two minutes, somehow keeping out Gary Lines’ downward header.

Green settled and Clayton went close, lobbing Sam Butcher, only to see Holmer’s defence clear the ball away.

The visitors did take the lead on 22 minutes, Smith putting Clayton in the clear and he drove his shot past Butcher.

Holmer tried to reply, Jack Plumridge-Dell firing wide, while Green almost had a second, Smith’s header cleared and Clayton forcing a good save from Butcher.

Henry Mungwira almost made it 2-0, rounding Butcher only to waste the opportunity.

After the break, Green doubled their advantage on 53 minutes when Reece Green found Smith and neatly drove the ball into the bottom corner.

Now content to catch their opponents on the break, Crawley defended solidly, as Eliot Derby put a shot wide for Holmer.

He was then denied by a fine tackle from Kevin McManus and Matt Wooster fired in a shot which was easily saved by Bull.

With Holmer looking increasingly unlikely to reduce the arrears Crawley ran down the clock in the closing stages and ran out worthy 2-0 winners, with Bull beating McManus, Smith and Sam Pemberton to the MOM award after his outstanding early save.
