Totts stay top by beating Amersham

Totternhoe remained top of the table on Saturday with a convincing 4-0 win at Amersham Town.

The hosts had the first chance of the game after just five minutes when a sloppy back pass was intercepted by Chris Blunden, who was denied by James Bromhall.

It took Totternhoe a while to get going, although they did have the lead on 38 minutes when Dan Lambeth was felled in the box by Thomas Cranmer, with the striker stepping up to net his 40th goal of the season from the spot.

Amersham should have equalised just after the break when Blunden again was through on goal, but Bromhall came out on top once more, saving with his feet, with Wayne O’Connor heading Squires-Adams’ rebound off the line.

Totts then came to life though as Chris Golding doubled the lead on 70 minutes, volleying home after Joel McCormick’s wonderful run and chip came back off the crossbar.

Lambeth made it 3-0 with 10 minutes to go, heading in McCormick’s cross to bag a 41st goal of the season and then Lee Loasby sealed victory in stoppage time, firing in from close range.

Totternhoe now lead the table by one point from Thame Rangers, although their rivals do have three games in hand.

Afterwards, boss Chris Robson said: “It was a very pleasing win for a number of reasons.

“Firstly, although we won last week I thought our performance was well below the standards I expect, so I was looking for a reaction.

“We weren’t perfect and after an average first half we were lucky to be leading at the break, but the second half we were much better and got our rewards with three further goals.

“Secondly, Amersham are a much improved side who have brought in an experienced manager with good pedigree who has been able to attract some good players in recent weeks.

“So to win as convincingly as we did away from home against a good side was very pleasing.

“I was so pleased how we defended too as young James Bromhall produced two crucial saves to make it three clean sheets in four games.

“Our defence was solid and I must mention how well our full backs Jack Rimmer and Chris Doggett are currently playing as they do go unnoticed.

“Going forward with the attacking players we have we know we will score goals, so if we can keep them out at the other end we should hopefully continue to win games.”
