Karate kids turn on the style
JKL Karate Dojo enjoy best ever international event
Karate kid Ryan Parkins stormed to three golds and a silver as Hightown-based JKL Karate Dojo recorded their best-ever international event medal tally at the JSKA World Cup Championships.
Spectators at the two-day competition at the Manchester Velodrome witnessed JKL's 25-strong squad scoop a total of 11 medals against a strong field of 800 competitors from 31 countries.
Their endeavours resulted in an impressive haul of four gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
Leading the way was 10-year-old Parkins with his stunning haul, which saw him take the title of world champion in his kumite division.
Also earning world champion accolades in the team events were Charlie Pepper, Ajay Ghela, Hetty Croke, Amelia Jordan, Amy Parkins, Jamie Pepper and Ryan Slack.
On their record-breaking performance, JKL chief instructor sensei Sabrina Daniels said: "I don't think a lot of the students have realised what great achievements they have reached and it will take a little while for it to sink in properly."
JKL technical director and current Luton Sports Coach of the Year, sensei Fred Daniels, added: "Once again, our students have done us proud and put Luton firmly in the centre of the international stage. It's a pity that we probably won't see karate at the 2012 London Olympics."
Anyone aged six or above, and is interested is trying karate, are invited to attend the novice class on Saturday mornings, between 10-11am at the Hightown Community Sports and Arts Centre in Concorde Street, Luton.
