Floodlight failure saves Hatters' blushes
Luton Town were saved from a hiding in the quarter-finals of the Bedfordshire FA Senior Challenge Cup when their tie at Biggleswade Town was abandoned after 55 minutes on Tuesday night because of floodlight failure with the Hatters 5-1 down.
Waders made light work of Luton side that named six U17s and coach Martin Prickett said: "A lack of desire to do the uglier things that are required to play senior football cost us dearly tonight.
"One of the problems with Academy and Centre of Excellence football is that it doesn't prepare players for the realities of the game. The surface required us to be direct, the opposition needed a physical response from our midfielders, and unfortunately we were unable to provide either.
"As a group we have to learn tough lessons quickly if we are going to achieve our goals of playing at the highest level. It was men against boys tonight, as we haven't dealt with the physical side of the game."
Jamie Steele gave the Waders the lead on 16 minutes and Aaran Cavill netted a second six minutes later.
Bobby Dance added the third after Taylor Nathaniel gave away a soft penalty on the half hour, but Ryan Da Silva pulled one back for the Hatters.
Nathaniel was then sent off for handball on the line and, although Cavill's penalty was saved, Craig Radcliffe tucked away the rebound.
Waders skipper Liam Folds lobbed home the fifth five minutes after the break, before the lights went out. The winners of the rearranged game will host either Langford or Leighton Town.
