Rovers confirm former St Albans boss Gray as new manager

After a disappointing season in which Rovers followed up a play-off place last term by finishing 18th in the table, previous manager Jon Reed left the club last week.

However, on Gray, who led St Albans from promotion from the Southern League to the Conference South, Barton chairman Darren Whiley commented: “It’s been a tough season for all concerned at the club but we were on the back foot from the off with management issues.

“It’s critical at this level of football to have the right team off the pitch as it is on. Sadly we have lacked in a quality manager but I’m delighted to announce that ex-St Albans manager Jimmy Gray will be taking over the management reigns.

“We have been talking to a number of targets for a good few weeks, taking our time to make the correct decision for the long term good of the club.

“After meeting with Jimmy things just clicked for both parties as his drive and determination will allow us to push forward again next season.

“Jimmy was a great player for us with over 100 appearances and for him to come back full of enthusiasm and his Conference experience has boosted the moral at the club tenfold.

“Next season can’t come soon enough now.”

On taking the position, Gray added: “I’ve had a nice rest since leaving St Albans but I’m delighted to be back in the dugout at Barton Rovers.

“Hard work and preparation have already begun and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Rovers held their end of season presentation after Saturday’s home game at Sharpenhoe Road.

Club captain Paul Andrews picked up Player of the Season along with a shirt to mark his 300th appearance for the club.

James Bishop was voted Players Player while keeper Kyle Forster picked up Supporters Player and Young Player of the Season went to Tyler Ingham.
