Buckle targets money-spinning cup run after opportune Walker announcement

A money-spinning run in the FA Cup is being targeted by Town chief Paul Buckle, writes Mark Wood.

The Luton manager has previously enjoyed good runs in the world’s premier cup competition and is looking for more of the same this time out.

Having already triumphed 2-0 at Cambridge United, he has his eyes set on making it far further than Saturday’s first round visit of Nuneaton Town.

He said: “Before Cambridge I was a little bit reluctant to say that I had been on good runs.

“But I have been, I said that before and been fortunate enough to get into the third, the fourth round and it does bring a lot of money to the football club.

“In the last five seasons now I’ve been on a decent cup run, so I don’t want that to change.

“I’ve emphasised to the players how important the cup is. The good thing about the group of players at Luton is that we don’t ask them to change.

“Whether we’re playing a development game, a youth game or a first team game, whether that’s cup, league, whatever we play in the same manner.

“If we are out there playing a five-a-side, the boys play to win, always, that’s what’s coached here, that’s what I believe in.”

And he believes there are plenty of pluses to a cup run, saying: “It brings a lot of good things a run. You never know what’s going to be in the future, but certainly winning games and staying in cups gives momentum.

“If you went outside now and saw our boys training you wouldn’t say that any of them were moaning about being in the cup.

“It’s great, you get new footballs to train with as well! So it’s all good.”

Nuneaton boast striker Adam Walker, who they this week revealed recently turned down a move to Kenilworth Road.

The timing of the announcement would seem particularly prudent with the two teams set to meet again.

Buckle added: “We’re nice and professional, we wouldn’t do something like that.

“We are looking at a number of players. We never stop looking and I had a conversation with their manager regarding players and nothing came of it and we move on.”
