Hatters would need to pay for Seagulls defender Rea

Luton Town will have to pay a fee if they want to sign Brighton & Hove Albion defender Glen Rea on a permanent basis this season.

Although it was thought the 21-year-old would be a free agent, the Seagulls have activated an option for an extra year on Rea’s contract, according to local paper The Argus, meaning should Hatters want to sign him, they will need a fork out a small sum.

Rea, who played 10 times for the Hatters, has also attracted the attentions of former club Southend United too, where he spent six months last season, but Shrimpers boss Phil Brown admitted to the Southend Echo, the move was an unlikely one.

Speaking about Rea recently, plus ex-Charlton striker Joe Pigott, Jones said: “They’re in our position criteria in terms of our list.

“Now whether we are able or whether we choose to bring them in is another thing.

“They’re two players I know very well and really like, two players who have done well for us.

“They are two that are within our recruitment list.

“Without putting pressure on anything, they are two that we knew and we like, so there maybe a deal to be done, you never know.”

Meanwhile, the Hatters continue to be linked with a loan move for Seagulls goalkeeper Christian Walton.

The 20-year-old, who has played for England U21s, made 10 appearances last term during spells at Bury and Plymouth Argyle.
