Jones doesn't want to do Newport any favours

The Exiles require just a point to ensure their League Two status for another season, while they could be safe anyway if second bottom York City fail to win at promotion-chasing Accrington Stanley.

Jones said: “Hopefully (they won’t be safe) by gaining anything from us, that’s the thing we want.

“Newport are a good football club, traditional football club, they’ll come here and I’m sure there’ll want to win the game like every other team who comes here.

“But we’ve got to concentrate on us, our home form has been patch lately. The results have been patchy, the form hasn’t been bad to be fair, so we’ve got to make sure we put on a performance and stamp our authority on the game to try and get the points for us because we need them.”

Hatters have endured a difficult season at Kenilworth Road this term, with just six wins in front of their own fans as opposed to a magnificent 12 on the road.

When asked why that might be, Jones continued: “I think at times we’ve played better at home, we’ve been a lot more fluent, just sometimes there might be less space, sides are less ambitious when they come to Kenilworth Road.

“Away from home there’s more impetus on the home side to do well, maybe more space for us to exploit, lots of things.

“As long as the points come, I’m not too concerned, but I’m looking forward to this weekend and I want us to put on a performance and get a result.”

Hatters go into the match on the back of three straight wins when asked if he wished the campaign wasn’t drawing to a close, Jones added: “In terms of the momentum we have, it is a cliche, no we wouldn’t (like the season to end) but who’s to say you’d continue in the vein?

“Lets let be philosophical about it though, we’re in good form at the minute, we’d like it to continue a few more games, we’d like to extend our season, that could be one way of it not ending.

“Since I’ve come, I think we’ve on the whole made good progess. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made, happy with the blueprint we’ve put in place and I’m excited abour our future.”
