Jones will monitor both Kinsella and Vassell

Hatters boss Nathan Jones will continue to cast an eye over trialists Lewis Kinsella and Isaac Vassell after both featured in the 9-0 thumping of Bedford Town in a pre-season friendly yesterday afternoon.

Kinsella, 21, who was released by Aston Villa in the summer, spent time on loan at Luton in the 2014-15 season, making three appearances under previous boss John Still.

He played the second 45 at the Eyrie and if signed would provide cover for Dan Potts as boss Jones said: “He’s come in, provided competition for pre-season and if he does well enough then the door could be open.

“But we’ll gauge that as we go along. We have good cover in most areas, and we need to bring in one or two more then once we do that we’ll have a real competitive squad we feel.”

Meanwhile, on Vassell, 22, who started his career at Plymouth Argyle, before joining National League South side Truro City in 2014, where he stayed until the end of last season, Jones added: “We’ve known of him from our recruitment department and wanted to get him in at the end of last year, but it wasn’t quite the right time.

“Now has been the right time to bring him in and have a look at him and he’s done well, we know what he’s got, and it’s just about adapting that to a professional set-up.

“He’s someone that’s definitely of the interest, and we’ll see where we are.”

Although it’s not an area of the squad Jones had been looking to add to after bringing in Oxford striker Danny Hylton, he might make an exception for Vassell, adding: “A front man with Isaac is not one we actually need to strengthen, as we have real good competition in that area and with (Craig) Mackail-Smith to come back as well.

“But if someone becomes available that suits us and adds value to the club, then that’s what we’d look for.

“It’s not something we’re actively looking for but he’s someone we’ve had on our radar for a while and that’s why we’ve brought him in.”
